Brief: design and build a patient portal that gives citizens in England access to their NHS records and supports them to remotely self-manage their own health and wellbeing.

Key challenges: creating an integrated, dynamic product within a disjointed and monolithic environment that relies upon a multitude of disconnected systems and suppliers.

Maia is a patient portal app that allows patients to view, book, amend and cancel their appointments, complete health questionnaires and forms required by clinicians, access care plans, view clinical documents and access other health information.

Maia was the brainchild of me, our CEO, Kumar Jacob, and our operations director, Katy Edwards. We spent years understanding patient needs, clinical settings, and third-party systems and creating digital health solutions, leading us to design an all-in-one product that would support patients, clinicians, and carers by digitally assisting a user’s healthcare journey - which became particularly poignant during our COVID era.

Recently acquired by DrDoctor, Maia is now being integrated with their patient engagement platform (PEP), which is used across more than 70 NHS trusts and health boards in England

Maia was designed to be the underlying technology and design system for a customisable patient portal. Many NHS trusts across the country use (or used) a version of Maia under a different name and with a different visual identity. We designed front-ends that could be customised for dyslexia, young people, dark mode, anxiety, and more.
